Everglade 05:18
Here it comes. My big release. Cascading, I’m lost again. Walk backwards, to numb my face. Novacaine to dull the taste. One foot in, your silence breathes Hold my breath 'til my ears bleed. I still see the angels that breathe through your head Give you my weak side ’til I learn to forget. Falling and fading close your eyes and breathe Slap on a fake smile to make me believe If you could only see, How blue your eyes can be.
2.
Down in the blue Nothing left for you Find something right in everything wrong Out my window Need to let you know I’m dreaming up this feeling Do good on your own time. Leave me to mine. Count the stars above Just bright enough To light up the darkness in you Look to yourself I’ve tried to help This time you’re left to yourself Do good on your own time. Leave me to mine.

Swingset 02:30
Break-neck speeds of light calm me again tonight Still I can see the pictures in my head Reflected off your laughing eyes Smiling. Laughing Take up the world's time While the fake horizon shines Smile until my face is numb Shadows dancing free To this waltz in time with me From way up here I think I see where I grew up God it looks so different now Breaking, reaching. Touching. Not feeling Tasting my words melt, smile for the camera now

It’s time to make a wish To health and happiness Can’t stop wishing once I start I’ll always put you first in line My chin's up and I’m sure I’ll slip into my old ignorance Any second now, smack into another wall, At least we can help each other up. Must have lost my life with my lucky coin. Holding ground I can’t stand on Then I get my chance to grant my own wish, But I fall again, looking up at what I missed. My chin's up and I’m sure I’ll slip into my old ignorance. Any second now, smack into another wall, At least we can help each other up.

Kami 03:54
Drawing closer into black. Catch your own eyes staring back. Something in you pulls away each moment you pull on. Upward stare. Open mouth. Head tilted back. Through the windowpane your light fills in the cracks. Then everyone comes undone. Ancient feelings come alive. Deepens the impact of their imperfected lives. My talent lies in corners that my shadow hides. Empty hourglass. Make one choice to save your life. I see the cracks in your walls. It seems you built them to fall. Looking down on the ground I can see it all so clearly now. I wait each day for something. But find that I’ve found nothing. Eyes wide, hands tied behind the things we’ve all been taught.

In this photograph Eyes bleed my heart out. You stare, look and laugh. Fills my void for doubt. Can’t think of a better way to go than to bleed to death with you. Stained black into your white hands. So what’s the use. If I’ve been wrong before, I can be wrong again. If I trust any more, trust myself then. Can’t think of a better way to go than to bleed to death with you. Stained black into your white hands. So what’s the use. Flames flicker life away. Burning blue eyes.

Dreamstate 03:50
I see it in their eyes. Innocence lost. I see it in the pictures, Taken years ago. Destiny’s hand, molding lives and building roads to walk down. So why do people stumble? Does the road end? It trails into the wildest hills covered in the lush green entrapment of the sun. Weeds swallow up the concrete whole and reveal a trail of voices. Traces of dreams. Angelic whispers through the trees ahead. Yes, it gets clear. The stars breathe through the ocean while we wander. The winds carry the clouds while we punch in. The road circles and drops for us. The world falls to our feet and breathes its life into these silly lungs of ours. Two pillows. One head. Never thought it would look this ridiculous on my bed.

Dumbluck 04:52
Free-falling. With your wings. I’m on top of things, Now. Helpless ground. A View straight down. Your wind against my face. Shuts my eyes to the sound. Everyone, Digging so deep For the answers at their feet. Legs move through wet cement, Drying fast to slow us again. Open my eyes to doors I’ve closed, Through this empty feeling. Pull me up. Become unstuck Pluck out the centerpiece of my trust. And breathe. Still as water. Everything you do makes waves. You sink my ship, you wash the ruins away. Then your face excavates me at the bottom. Follow the trace of water laced to see me rotting. So I pull me up, Become unstuck. Pluck out the centerpiece of my trust. It tears me up. Just dumb luck. Just one heart. For the two of us.

Line Jumper 05:57
Keep to yourself, Drink to your health. It’s better that way. Your heart is bruised by words I choose to let myself say. Coming off of you is the hardest thing to do. Saw myself in broken glass at your feet. So tired of picking up these pieces that make me. Paralyzed in your eyes. Walk away with me inside. The light burns bright through it all. Sets fire to these paper walls. I see these angels’ faces traced in memories. The pale green stars above light up the carpet beneath my knees. Light, dark. Sun, moon. Love, hate. Me, you.
10.
Solitaire 03:40
Take a spin Until you’re wound and bound around An inclination to give in. The sound of silence wearing thin. A slice of life. That’s all you’ll get. The light shines bright onto my eyes. Stretched across your lines, A purple sky defines mine. Two hands count the time. Making reason for this rhyme. Direction, encompassed, starry blankets out of focus. Peering out. Dream within. Refine a finer piece of mind. And take it on the chin. Align the time it took to find.

Eyes toying in this play set Ideas only to amuse Plastic stars on ceiling tile to imitate Won’t you move the curtain from the window in this place. Cast in. Spilling forth. Here the means to open ends. Closed with the circles that we run in time. Leave an out; a martyr for my selfish ways Won’t you move the ornament from the window in this place. With the blue screen behind, I act my part for. Sculpted sea of rusted shorelines Whisper beneath A thousand cold feet. Divides of glass and static Burning eyes I find the time. To call upon the angels Rewind the playwrights’ lines Back-packing through the trail. Echoing. Sentiment.

With a thimble you thumb through These pages I’ve written for you These words become my hands These waters whisper the truth A testament; Prescient, Seeing it through these green eyes, I’ve realized a constant, an upside-down end. Peering through your darkest haze, Molding mentalities of your slaves. With plastic words from plastic pens, you’ll bleed out the means to your end. A testament; Prescient, Seeing it through these green eyes, I’ve realized a constant, an upside-down end. Turn a pale cheek, moistened by rain. Your laugh kills me. Funny, I feel the same. So I bury my head in books that I’ve already read To keep myself from recoiling to you. A textbook fall into you. Gravity tells me to. Nothing I can say, nothing I can do, can leave an impression of any value onto you.

Photo Finish 07:32
PHOTO FINISH Neon. Flickering light. Mimic the motions of daylight. The waves from our mess made the sleeping sky I meet you in. Your airwaves move Carelessly through and through, As fingers pulling on The heart of my desire The frailest hands Bring out speechless eyes Dangling displays in motion set to stone in the willingness of my sight. Mudras crying out. The Goddess, the Bleeding Science, Decides for me now. (Knowing your faults well enough to conclude yourself. Burn the paper shuffling in your eyes. Better off bleeding as the eyes of the particularly hated.)
14.
Amassed amidst the shadowy symbols Books bound in skin show paperbacks Weary from hope and theory The theory of hope closed within And you speak From those insides closed to me While you read You’re reading me to sleep The notion of forward To a head on backward It’s new line of work steadily moving Through old motions And you speak From those insides closed to me While you read You’re reading me to sleep You should be Coming of age to bleed But I speak for myself And it takes one to know one. This lifelong trace Of continuity Into a little light left Dying in me And the engine burns Well into my dreams Surreal divide Torn at the seams

Even 03:48
White flowers in pale night, Brushed by moonlight. Silver and blue. Silent, staring into skyline sharing with you, Make one from two. Spills on rooftops, Dreaming over the horizon line. Blinding and breathing, Coruscating in these eyes. Champagne sunrise. Green and yellow.

Burnfield 04:16
She’s a vampire, dressed in red. Wants me to join her among the undead. She’s a good liar; never know just what she said. Her teeth will sink into my head. She sleepwalks down the stairs. Stops at the mirror. Finds no reflection there. So she breaks it. Seven years bad luck. But she always makes it by way of someone else’s blood. It’s time to turn in. The sun’s coming up. Into your coffin. So I can nail it shut.

Blacklight 05:50
Foam-lit dawn On this dreaming sea Clapping waves of it’s secrets to me. Outstretched arms Just out of reach Holding fast to what keeps you from me. This pastel sky This sacred field Becomes the backdrop for what I feel Her weathering winds capsize the lives to small to begin Each looking glass plain as the days the blind hide within Routine biased in beauty Layer the slides as one. You the projection, the perfect anything Becoming undone. My heart in your hands You left me with yours The emptiness absence affords Fallen into crystal blue Painting poetry on this glass for you to see through My angels’ legs swallowed in grass Solely as eyes, I let her pass. Without effect Your eyes drop low Lips curled down As teardrops flow
20.
Raise the glass To our twisted sky Stains soaking slow upon it’s lullaby Coated in raining words of poetry amidst The brushing, as once I’d done, of my blood from your lips. The night of all the days we’ve known is upon us Captures the moment. Pacing further in your movement, Into the day. Displaced displays run-through Empty roadways paved over you. I’ve thrown the burning memory into a sunset. Far over waters. Keeps me banked ashore. Resting our blue so I rest assured. I’ve cleaned up after you. A mess of a message buried with the truth.
21.
We are the hand-me-down The stars move 'round. Polar skies and offset eyes Leave the burn just out of reach. Hides behind transparencies. We open to close Down within the cold of arms. Conditioned through the wind of emptiness. And so the excuse becomes exposed Immortalized in prose of common symbols of the closed.

Cornerless living room Sheltering fragments out of tune Day breaks in the puzzle box The puzzle in the pieces Running across the lines For the ideal loves the mind In the escape the pictures dream behind Held under a simpler light in a room for the rest And what of the shelves, out of sight, out of mind What the alignment, it lies for you to find This can't be figured out this time Consider this the misprint and still We're just fine

about

Formed in 1997, Chicago's Summerleague was formed by best friends Matthew Brendan Clark (bass) and Sean Kelly (guitar/vocals), who quickly spotted the tapping foot of Dave Robison (drums) while caddying, asking him to drum, because....he 'must' be a drummer. Oh, he was. The band quickly and quietly developed a sincere form of heartfelt and structured emo focusing on the poetics of the genre, both musically and lyrically, in direct response to what Clark and Kelly both felt were slipping or lacking in most local and even national emo bands of the time. "No more of that sloppy, half-assed shit. Write songs that have intentionality and play them well." The sincerity of purpose led to a lack of desire to 'get out there', and pretty soon you ended up with a gem of a band that nobody knew existed, and flew under the radar until disbanding in 2001 after moving together downstate to Charleston, IL (where the booze and the books took over). This untimely but in many ways inevitable demise left a load of new, unrecorded material to the ether, but more so their catalog of recordings which were previously released, except for a limited CDEP on Forge Again Records and various demos. Their sound can be connected to Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, and Texas is the Reason while lyrically, Clark's writing drew on Blake Schwarzenbach and apocalyptic visionary poet William Blake in equal measure. The band played regularly in and around Chicago, but made no attempt to tour, resulting in a dense, developed, yet lost body of work that has been long overdue for a proper release. This digital release collects the complete recorded output of the band, spread out over 4 proper studio sessions and 2 DIY basement studio sessions between 1998 and 2001.
